General objective: Med Culture and participants will explore how to contribute further to women empowerment through culture and arts based on good practices at a regional level
Specific objectives:
- SHOWCASE Med Culture’s contributions to the empowerment of women and girls;
- ADVOCATE for continued and more substantial EU support for culture in the region;
- IDENTIFY successful practices and barriers with respect to women’s participation in cultural life;
- NETWORK with regional actors contributing to the empowerment of women and culture in the region;
- COMMUNICATE using this activity as a multi-layered communication opportunity;
Description: There is a proliferation of programmes addressing women's rights and their empowerment in their respective societies but hardly any address their place in culture development. Women play an important role in the development of the culture sector in Mediterranean countries in contexts of serious discrimination. There is need for improving their positioning as policy makers, trendsetters, entrepreneurs and artists. This need is even more pressing when one considers that gender, culture and rights intersect and cultural rights also affects who in the community holds the power to define its collective identity. Med Culture will explore how to contribute further to women empowerment in the sector based on good practices at international level.
Outcomes:
- Determine successful practices to strengthen women participation in cultural life and impact on decision-making processes
- Identify barriers preventing women access to management and leadership positions in the culture sector
- Identify main regional actors in the Neighbourhood South who are contributing to the empowerment of women in the culture sector
- Identify common challenges faced on a regional level and discuss specific measures to increase women representation amongst audiences
- Integrate results in MedCulture advocacy initiative
